Alerts and checks

How do I send alerts to Slack or a webhook?

Short answer

Open Alerts and use Add a webhook or Slack channel. Choose the type, paste a public https address and press Add and test. A test message is sent right away, and alerts start only once the receiver has accepted it.

Slack

Create an incoming webhook for the channel in Slack and paste its address, which starts with https://hooks.slack.com/. Slack is available on every paid plan; the Free plan alerts by e-mail and push.

Signed webhooks

A webhook receives a JSON message for each alert on your own server. Signed webhooks start with the Team plan.

  1. Add the channel. The signing secret is shown once: copy it then. It cannot be shown again.
  2. Check the X-Webhook-Signature header of each request before you trust it. It has the form t=<unix seconds>,v1=<hex>, where the hex value is the HMAC-SHA256 of <t>. followed by the raw request body, made with your secret. Reject a request whose time is far from yours.

When the test is not accepted

The channel gets no alerts until a test succeeds. Fix the receiver, then send a test again from the channel’s row. The address must be a public https address: an address on a private network is refused. If the page says the saved destination cannot be opened on our side, remove the channel and add it again.
