How do I set up two-factor sign-in?

Short answer

Open Account security and choose Turn on two-factor sign-in. You need an authenticator app on your phone, such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or 1Password. Owners and admins must use it, so a stolen password alone cannot open your clients’ sites. For members and viewers it is optional.

Steps

  1. Open an authenticator app on your phone.
  2. Add an account with the key shown on the page: type the key, or use the link to open it in an app on the same phone.
  3. Enter the six-digit code the app shows. The code changes every 30 seconds.
  4. Save your recovery codes. You get ten. Each one signs you in once if you lose your phone, and they are shown only now. Download or copy them and keep them somewhere other than your phone.

Good to know

  • Two-factor sign-in can be turned on once your email address is confirmed. If you signed up on one device and confirmed the address on another, the first sign-in with your password asks for a six-digit code we email to the address: enter it, and the account is yours to secure.
  • A sensitive change asks you to confirm it is you again with a fresh sign-in.
  • You can make new recovery codes at any time. The old ones stop working at once.
  • Owners and admins cannot turn two-factor sign-in off. Members and viewers can.
  • Where you are signed in on the same page lists your sessions and lets you sign out of the others.
  • Lost your phone? See lost phone or recovery codes.
